Thanks to hip-hop culture, teeth are fast becoming a popular showroom for the latest jewelry collection: gold grills.
Grills or “grillz” have been around since the 1980s but did not really catch on to hip-hop fans and followers. But today, due to a variety of communication media available to everyone, it has become a trend that even non hip-hop fans are trying to emulate.
This type of jewelry is worn over the teeth and is generally made from precious metals like gold, silver, and even platinum. Most are removable like other jewelry but there are some people who prefer to have their gold grills attached permanently.

Reactions to this practice, as expected, are varied. Promulgators and followers see putting gold grills on your tooth as nothing more than a form of adornment; just trying to look good. But hip-hop artists are quick to defend that it is more than a practice of vanity but more of a social statement about their work and life as musicians and vocal artists.

Since not everyone can afford to pay a lot of money for gold grills like the hip-hop stars and celebrities, many resort to alternative sources which oftentimes are unreliable and can pose potential hazards to their bodies like mouth infection. Licensed dentists and oral experts should be the only ones that are allowed to perform a permanent grill attachment.
